ES2007S. Probably the most enjoyable module ever.

Alright, this post title is a little exaggerated, but I hope it gets my point across that I really liked attending this class. Many thanks to everyone involved because you are the reason class time was enjoyable. It was not a concern that we were not choosing our own project groups; I enrolled this class alone anyway. But I am glad I made friends along the way. Special mention to Geraldine, See Chai and Mc hot fudge sundae for making this module and the project memorable.

The best part of this module was that it helped me put the importance of soft skills into perspective. Day in and day out we utilize many of these skills covered in class without realizing its significance. To grow up in Singapore is already an advantage in intercultural and language aspects. Interpersonal skills: I must be doing something right if I have friends that we can call each other for the most absurd reasons. And since my project group did not implode, we must all be doing it right too! This has turned out to be a self-discovery trip.

I mentioned job search associated skills as one of my top priorities in taking this module, and now, I can consider that mission accomplished. With our classroom preparations I walked out of my latest interview confident and happy with myself. And that is one very good feeling. (Whether it is successful or not, that is another matter.)

With this post marks the end of ES2007S, but transferring the soft skills to my life is just the beginning of my journey to be a well-versed and tactful person. Communication is an art I have yet to perfect. Like a mad scientist, I shall persevere in its experimentation.

P.S. Regarding the short discussion on Thursday about multitasking; I drafted this entry while watching cars fly on a rainy Shanghai circuit. I may be generalizing but I think we (this generation of ‘kids’) spent most of our life multitasking. Why not make full use of our access to technology? I could watch an episode of House while writing a few notes on Notepad on the train ride to school! Studying + music (and sometimes + dinner). Work + Facebook + YouTube. How is it ever possible we survive a non-multitasking iPad?!!

  1. Thank you for this reflection, Iris.

Oh you multi-tasker! You're indeed right. Your generation has grown up doing just as you say. The question is this: how effective can a person be with the quality of the "product" when the process is jam-packed with outside stimuli?

But that's another issue. Here I want to express my appreciation for your own view of the way things went in ES2007S. I'm especially happy that you walked out a job interview confident. I do hope we were able to help you on that score.

Best of luck in all your future endeavors, Iris!

  2. Hi Iris!

I'm sure everyone of us walked out of the room being confident that we learnt something. We better do, or Brad would be disheartened. Haha.

Honestly, I felt that you really become a more confident person since the first day I met you in class. This is really a transferable skill and I believe that it will bring you futher in life anywhere you are, in whatever you do. =D

I really like your last paragraph on how you are going to incorporate what you've learnt in this module into real-life scenarios. That's really great! This is one of the best satisfaction anyone can get from a module!

All the best in the finals and your future. No much to worry about resumes and job interviews, right? *winks*

  3. Hi Iris!
I am also a mutli tasker! *high 5*! I like the title of your post. Though we have alot assignments and a project to do for this module, I am glad that both of us enjoyed the module! And I am glad that you are able to apply the interview skills that you have learnt in your lastest interview! And yes, I agree with you that we are all on our way on learning to be a more effective communicators, just that all of us are at the different stages of the journey. Some of us at the 500m mark while some are already at the 1200m mark. And yes, communication is definitely more of an art. And human beings being so complex, it will be hard when two of them start to interact!

I wish you all the best in your coming exams and all your future endeavours!

  5. MC Hot Fudge Sundae! What would we do with you?! Ha Ha.. Thanks for making my experience in ES2007S memorable too. I wish I was as good as you at multi-tasking. I can’t multi-task for nuts! Anyway, I hope you get the job. 

  6. @ Brad:
Yes I admit multitasking does not work for doing serious work (like writing essays, studying for exams...). Work that require 100% concentration should never be part of a multitask session.

What we do is an optimal use of resources.I think of it as an aged computer system. On my old computer I can't run Word and Photoshop together because they both hog too much RAM. But I can use Notepad, play Solitaire, listen to WinAmp, and MSN at the same time.

Thank you Brad for such a good class.

    @ Stephanie:
Haha yes I'll transfer all those worries to my exams instead. All the best!

    @ Vanessa:
*high 5* Sometimes we just have too much to do at the same time, right? =) I hope we are all good communication artists from now on.

All the best to you too!

    @ Geraldine:
Oh yeah hot fudge sundae! No credits to strawberry. Hmmm...nope I didn't get the job. =( Gotta keep up my job hunting.

All the best in your exams and future, ok?

  7. I am feeling increasingly desperate for a job too. Time to send out my resume to apply for jobs. Anyone wants to give feedback? haha. I think that that segment was possibly the most important part of this course. I never knew how good a resume can look or how bad it could have gone until I took this module. Before that I have always thought it's just routine to have a resume and all. Anyway good luck on job hunting. Introduce some jobs to me if you don't want to take them.

I must have been from another generation. I cannot multi-task for nuts.

  8. Hey Soon Yee

Maybe its not the generation thing. Maybe guys just can't multitask! (OK Gay guys I look forward to your correspondents). Haha... The reason why guys don't multitask is because we tend to focus ourselves on the task at hand and do a good job. (ok girls I look forward to your correspondents too)

    Cheers

  9. Hey Iris,

It is the company's loss to not hire you because you are such a sweet girl.( I like the way you answer your phone call "wai wai wan bin wai") haha...
That being said good luck in finding a job. I am also looking for internship this summer but its seems like i can find none... I'm an engineers anyone want to hire me???

Good luck in the coming exams everyone.

    Take care

  10. Hey! I guess like what you said multi tasking is the part of the culture of our generation. We just keep our schedule so packed that we feel uncomfortable sitting down and doing nothing. Haha! I think it would be good to take some time off and just chill! ((: Lunch again soon? ((: All the best for your papers!

  11. Hi Iris!

Me too! Somehow I felt that this module is also a wake up call. It is really time to start planning for your future career by doing internships and taking up courses which could prepare us for your careers.

  12. @ Soon Yee:
How about you send me some job lobangs? Haha. Yes I agree I too did not realise how bad can a bad resume be!

    @ See Chai:
Okay... I think I should apply for telemarketing or receptionist... HAHA!

By the way, I am pretty sure everyone can multitask; just that the extent of multitasking is arguable.

    @ Shihhan:
YES! Exactly what I was thinking: uncomfortable sitting down and doing nothing.
But, I am starting to enjoy a casual reading session on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Must be getting older. Ouch.

    @ Deenise:
Same sentiments. How I wish I took this module in year 2 instead.

  13. I'm so glad you walked out of that interview feeling confident - what's that like? I haven't been to an actual interview yet - I haven't even been shortlisted in the first place... Nobody wants me!

I got to know you better when we interviewed together trying to keep a serious face - I thought you were intimidating when you wanted to be ;)

It was really nice having you in class and maybe we can all meet up after exams again - and you can tell me more about Forensics then haha. Take care!!!

  14. Iris!

I think that it's wonderful that you applied the skills learnt for the job interview and walked out confidently and happy with how your latest interview went. Having been to a few interviews, they were rather nerve-wrecking experiences for me. But after taking this module, I do hope that I would be able to draw on it and walk out feeling confident, like you :)

It was really nice having lunch after the last class together. And I got to know you so much better too :)

All the best with the exams and job hunting :) Haha. Work in the airport!!
